Paul, in prison, and praising

As we begin our studies in Ephesians, it is surprising to read this letter and find that
Paul says very little about his circumstances. He is in prison, but he speaks little of his
prison conditions. He is chained to a Roman guard 24/7, but that is not what he is
thinking about.

No, Paul resists the temptations to interpret his life and circumstances by his best
insights. He fights off a self-focused view of his circumstances -- the temptation of
asking “why me?” He resists questioning the wisdom and sovereignty of God. Instead,
he erupts in praise for the sovereign, generous grace of God in Christ. He celebrates
that Godʼs purposes are being fulfilled and Godʼs grace will be exalted in the last day.
What does the good news of Godʼs grace in Christ have to do with our tough times?
