The Church and the Glory of God

- Series: The Flock of God
God is an communicator. His glory is great and he desires to reveal his glory to his creatures. He does so because he alone is ultimately lovely, wondrous, worthy of all our affection.
In order to communicate, he chooses means, unusual means, at least from our perspective. Why not just speak out loud to us? It would be more efficient and tidy. Rather, he chooses to use us, witnesses to Christ, preachers of the Gospel, fellow-members of the body. We speak, we proclaim, we converse about the glory of God.
And, he uses the church. He has purposed to display his manifold wisdom through the church, and he has determined to reveal his glorious wisdom to the invisible powers.
This week, we begin a series of messages on the church. The primary focus will be on the Great Shepherd and his care of his flock. He cares for hiw whole flock by caring for each flock, each local church. We will look at the means he employs to provide for, protect, and guide his sheep.
But the big picture is this -- God has committed himself to reveal his infinite wisdom through the preaching and life of a local church. That infinite wisdom is his Son, who is foolishness to the eyes of unbelieving persons. The church is where his wisdom is proven, where the Gospel is believed and lived out with increasing measure.
