The world is filled with division. Our nation is filled with strife. Our city is hurt by disunity. All that is because my heart is filled with pride.
It was not supposed to be that way. Creation was good. Man and woman experienced unity and harmony. The evil one tempted them and sin was chosen. It was not just anysin -- it was the desire to be as god. It was pride.
Ever since then, every one, from birth to the grave, lives to be exalted. If you agree with their views, it is because you are wise. If you disagree, it is because you are a fool. We compete with each other for praise. We are at enmity with God.
Jesus came into such a world. He came to destroy the enmity between us. He did not offer lectures on communication. He did not teach us to love one another. No, he went to the cross. On the cross God counted our sin against him. On the cross he died as though he were proud. On the cross he absorbed Godʼs wrath for our sin and put to death the enmity between us.
The power of the cross redeems us from death. The power of the cross unites the people of God. We experience that power in the local church.
